Christmas Centerpiece With Apples And Candles

November 19, 2014 by Sherry Tingley

Create a beautiful centerpiece for your next Christmas gathering.
Create a beautiful centerpiece for your next Christmas gathering.

Creating a festive feeling for a special event requires a little planning and a lot of creativity. At a recent event, over 30 woman gathered to help finish blankets for a local organization that provides care for those who are being abused by others. During the event, we had several talented women who shared some unique recipes for Christmas morning breakfast. The recipes were oh so yummy.

The fun Christmas centerpiece helped put everyone in the Christmas spirit. Many people who have seen the photo have asked how to create the centerpiece, so we decided to share that with you.

You will need: 1 large decorative tray, about 2 dozen green and red apples, 6 tea lights with holders, 1 larger hurricane glass candle holder, lemon juice, 6 inch strips of evergreen branches, 18″ – 36″ red and white wire edged Christmas ribbon.

The first thing you need is a tray to put it on. In the photo, the tray is a piece that was a family heirloom, but you can find reasonably priced trays at local stores. Just make sure you get one sturdy enough to hold the weight of the objects you add to it.

The second thing you’ll need is a dozen red apples and a dozen green apples. Pick out the undamaged ones that look the best.

You’ll need about 6 glass tea light holders as well as 6 plain colored tea lights.

Find an evergreen tree and trim some branches off in small 3″-6″ strips to be used to “garnish” the apple designs. If you don’t have an evergreen tree near by, just go to Michaels and get a small bunch of evergreen greenery and trim off about 10 strips to use instead.

You will need a large clear glass hurricane candle holder which can be found at a variety of craft stores. Use a large sized glass that is 12″ high or higher for best effects. Make sure the opening of the holder is wide enough for your candle to go into. You can use a plain red candle or you can use a candle that is already in a glass container. Whichever you prefer. It is a little easier for cleaning purpose if you use a candle already in a jar.

The last thing you will need is 2 inch or wider red and white wire edged ribbon. You’ll need at least 18″, depending on how elaborate you want to make the bow. 36″ would make a multi looped bow.

Directions for assembly are pretty easy. It will be easier for you if you decide on the place you want to put the centerpiece so you don’t have to move it after you have designed it. Once you have found your spot, then design it there.

The first thing you want to do is to choose 6 apples in both colors to hold the tea lights. Just measure the width of the tea light and cut out exactly that much of the apple. Dig out the apple until you can fit the glass tea light holder in the apple. Do that for all six apples. To prevent the apple from turning brown, you can drizzle lemon juice on them, or soak them in water with lemon juice. Use the ratios of one tablespoon of lemon juice to one cup of water. Soak them for about 5 minutes. Then drain the water off and pat them dry.

Rinse off the remaining apples and pat them dry.

Set your large hurricane glass candle holder in the center of a large – 9″ x 12″ or larger decorative tray. Start placing apples around the holder. The main objective is to stack the apples around the glass container in a random fashion and stacking some on top of each other. This will hide the majority of the center candle. Put the tea lights in small glass holders and put the holders into the apples you have carved out. Place these carved apples randomly around the piece.

Set your Yankee candle or large red candle in the center of the hurricane glass holder. Insert the small green evergreen trim between the apples at various places that will actually hold the trim without it falling down. Use these as a filler and an accent to your centerpiece.

Tie your wire edged ribbon around the upper portion of the hurricane glass and then into a bow. Let the ribbons edges drape down to the apples. Before lighting the candles make sure they aren’t touching any of that ribbon. Light the candles right before your guests arrive.

That is all you have to do. Play with the arrangement of the apples to create a nice balanced look and feel. This centerpiece creates a nice Christmas spirit and will delight your guests. Enjoy.

Tis The Season For Home Made Chocolate

Black candy boxes showcase your homemade candies beautifully.
Black candy boxes showcase your homemade candies beautifully.
Time for ho-ho-holding forth in the kitchen, if you’re one of those who believe that the words “holiday” and “chocolate” are interchangeable. The gift of a homemade tidbit of chocolate is irresistible. The array of recipes is amazing, with truffles, toffee, barks and traditional fudge (or how about a chocolate/bacon combination?) easily available.

And it’s so easy to slip that goodie into a colorful candy box just the right size and tie it up with a bow. Then stand by for holiday kudos. The real trick is to prevent family members from snarfing up the goodies before you can get them into that special box. Plan on enough to please both family and friends. That means starting well ahead of the calendar.

The next issue is storing your chocolate treats while you wait for the calendar to catch up to you. Fortunately, chocolate has a long shelf life and you can take steps to assure that it will preserve its flavor, texture and appearance until the voila! moment.

What you need is your homemade chocolates, candy foil and airtight storage containers. With these items on hand, you are ready to preserve your treats until the just-right opening.

To store your chocolates, tear or cut a piece of the candy foil into a square about three times the size of the candy piece. Place the candy in the center of the square and fold two opposite points of the square into the center. Seal the edges, then fold the two other opposite corners over the candy and repeat the process, pressing the foil to ensure a good fit. Wrap each individual piece this way, then put the wrapped pieces into airtight containers.

Store the containers in a cool, dry place away from the sun. Your candy should be good for three months if you follow these instructions.

Chocolate also can be frozen. The best method is to pack pieces into retail boxes, then put the boxes into Ziplocked plastic bags. Vacuum seal or remove as much air as you can before putting them in the freezer.

Finding the right decorative boxes to make the presentation as sweet as what’s inside is easy. Visit BowsNBags.com for a great variety of sizes, types and colors.

There’s A Rosy Glow About Retail Sales

September 26, 2014 by Sherry Tingley

Rising Consumer Confidence Helps Retail Sales Industry
Rising Consumer Confidence Helps Retail Sales Industry
The latest government reports on retail buying and consumer confidence have a rosy glow about them. And with evidence of “solid economic growth” in the third quarter, it seems Americans are regaining some of the confidence they lost during the recent recession.

The August figures showed an 0.6 percent increase in retail purchases, following an 0.3 percent increase for the previous month, according to Commerce Department figures. In 11 of the 13 categories tracked by the department, there was improvement.

Michelle Girard, chief U.S. economist at RBS Securities Inc., Stamford, Connecticut, said, “Consumers are feeling better about the outlook for the economy, certainly, and that’s one of several factors that is supporting the better spending numbers.”

Contributing to the optimism is the improving job market, rising stocks and stabilizing home prices, along with a dip in fuel costs. Looking at the factors combined, experts are raising their forecasts for this quarter’s economic growth.

The Federal Reserve may raise interest rates sooner than was expected as the economy shows signs of returning vigor.

Consumer confidence is at the highest in more than a year, according to Thomson
Reuters/University of Michigan figures. The index for this month rose to 84.6, the highest since July 2013. A projection of expectations shows that more Americans are feeling more confident about the country’s economics than they expressed in the July 2013 surveys.

“The consumer is in decent shape right now,” said Gus Faucher, an economist with PNC Financial Services Group Inc. in Pittsburgh. “e are looking at solid economic growth in the third quarter.”

The annual back-to-school and back-to-college shopping sales appear to have validated the forecasts of improved sales, although they are still being analyzed.

Last month, some 142,000 workers were added to payrolls. Over the past six months, the increase in workers has totaled more than 1.4 million. The unemployment rate fell from 6.2 percent to 6.1 percent. But there has been no indication that wages or compensations has risen and that is a factor in government conversations about raising interest rates.

A mid-September meeting of leading federal economists was to look at the current figures and issue new forecasts for the interest rate, as well as projections for economic growth, unemployment and inflation.

Protect Your Trademark In China

September 24, 2014 by Sherry Tingley

Indian Horse Thieves Used To Expect Rewards For Finding Horses
Indian Horse Thieves Used To Expect Rewards For Finding Horses
Some native American Indians were expert at it. They would steal white men’s horses, then when they were caught, would claim to have “found and rescued” the animals, expecting a reward for their noble act.

In China, it works a little that way with trademarks. The country does not recognize trademarks registered in other countries. Unscrupulous Chinese then register a brand and sell it back to its legitimate owner.

That makes it tough for businessmen in the United States and Europe to do business with China. The European Chamber of Commerce did a survey in 2014 to solicit opinions regarding business confidence in China. One in four of the European member companies said intellectual property protection was one of the top three business challenges in dealing with China. The prospect of experiencing piracy and copycatting of their brand names, logos, etc., is a major problem, they said.

Catherine Zang, of the Deacons law firm in Hong Kong, offered suggestions about how businesses in other countries can protect their interests when dealing with China:

Don’t assume that since you have registered your trademark at home that your intellectual property will be honored abroad. China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce, which regulates commerce in that country, does not recognize other countries’ trademarks and if you resort to legal action, it will follow its own laws, making you very vulnerable. Make sure you purchase a trademark in China.

Protect Your Trademark
Protect Your Trademark

China’s Trademark Office has a ”first to file” policy and generally awards registration to whomever files first, whether or not there is proof of ownership. That gives trademark hijackers near carte blanche in picking up trademarks and selling them back to hapless owners. If your company’s name or logo is hijacked, it may be impossible for you to do business, since you won’t be recognized as being the owner. You could face legal action for trying. Buy your own trademark from China to prevent this behavior.

China passed an amendment to its trademark law this year requiring that applications “follow principles of honesty and good faith,” but it isn’t clear that this will have much impact on the piracy.

If your company is having a product manufactured in China and your intellectual property is stolen, it may be impossible for you to export your goods out of that country.

Zheng suggests paying money up front to register your trademark in China, rather than fighting the expensive battles if it is compromised. Hire a lawyer and work through one of the many trademark agencies in China. Research your brand or logo to be certain it has not already been taken. Decide if you want to retain your English-speaking trademark or create a new one using Chinese characters. Having both offers more protection and flexibility. Furnish agents with ample corporate documentation they can use to prove who they are and their association with you. Agents should have power of attorney to represent you in China.

China follows the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Nice Classification, which identifies 45 classes of goods and services. They want you to be product-specific and required that you register your classification. The system is complicated by the fact that you must register in all the possible classifications. For instances, shoes also could be considered clothing. If you are not specific, your logo could be grabbed if you fail to register in all the relevant categories.

If everything seems to be in order, the CMTO will publish your mark and then allow three months for formal opposition. If there is none, you proceed to registration. In about four months, you will receive a registration certificate.

Bag The Plastic Bags. Go With Reusable Bags

September 3, 2014 by Sherry Tingley

"For California, the overall cost to protect our waters from litter is roughly $428 million each year--with between 8% to 25% attributable to plastic bags alone according to clean up data from San Jose and Los Angeles County."
“For California, the overall cost to protect our waters from litter is roughly $428 million each year–with between 8% to 25% attributable to plastic bags alone according to clean up data from San Jose and Los Angeles County.” From Californians Against Waste
It’s happening more and more. Governments are watching the plastic pile up in their waste facilities and looking for options. California legislators have backed a ban on plastic bags, pending a signing by Gov. Jerry Brown by Sept. 30. Other municipalities and states are considering similar steps.

The trend has already been picked up by hard-core environmentalists, who are aware of companies that produce reusable shopping bags. It isn’t uncommon to see shoppers pack up their goods in a durable cloth bag before heading home.

Hawaii’s Maui County has made it illegal for stores to package purchases in plastic. Despite opposition from those who make the bags, the movement is gathering strength. Reusable cloth shopping bags are being recommended as an eco-sensible option. Looking for suitable compromise, some are suggesting a ban on plastic bags coupled with financial incentives for the bag producers to retool to produce heavier bags that would save the landfills.

The problem is enormous. More than 10 billion plastic bags are used in California every year, advocates associated with Californians Against Waste estimate. The group supports the California legislation to bar the use of plastic bags in commerce. In the coast state, there is concern that the bags get into the ocean, with potential harm to aquatic life.

Cathy Browne, general manager of Crown Poly, sees the problem from a different perspective. A strict ban on plastic bags without a compensating solution would result in heavy layoffs in businesses such as hers.

The California legislation didn’t slide easily through the process. There was heavy lobbying on both sides of the issue. A first version sponsored by State Sen. Alex Padilla, failed by three votes. Padilla has stubbornly kept the issue alive. “Single-use plastic bags not only litter our beaches, but also our mountains, our deserts and our rivers, steams and lakes,” he declared.

After close defeats, Padilla was able to align some of California’s bag-makers by offering the re-tooling option. Out-of-state manufacturers continued to campaign against his measure.

But the anti-plastic contingent seems to be gathering strength in other locations as well. It appears inevitable that reusable bags of cloth or other durable materials will be on the shoppers’ horizon before long.
